A GLIMPSE TO THE RAMADAN TRADITION IN INDONESIA

Ramadan is a special month for Muslims in Indonesia. During Ramadan, Muslims endure thirst and hunger by fasting for one month. There are several traditions that are carried out by Muslims in this holy month.

  1. Padusan tradition

​​Javanese do Padusan to welcome the month of Ramadan.  People go to springs, rivers, beaches, or swimming pools to clean themselves up. The purpose of ​​Padusan is to purify body and soul before the coming of the Ramadan month.

  1. Apologize to parents

Welcoming the presence of the Ramadan month, it has become a tradition of Muslims in Indonesia to apologize to their parents. Apologizing is so that we will have clean heart and there will hold no grudge while fasting in the month of Ramadan. Generally, this tradition of apologizing before fasting is also addressed to family, friends, and colleagues.

  1. Nyekar

Nyekar tradition ​or pilgrimage is usually done before the month of Ramadan. People visit and clean the graves of their parents and ancestors. Apart from that, the community also prayed for their families who had gone before them.

  1. Apeman tradition

Apeman tradition ​is held by the community in Yogyakarta. The word ​Apeman is ​derived from the word apem namely a traditional cake made from rice flour, sugar, eggs, coconut milk, and tapai. For the people of Yogyakarta, the apem cake is a symbol of mutual forgiveness. Apeman tradition ​aims to strengthen the brotherhood among the people in welcoming the month of Ramadan.

  1. Mesaharaty tradition

Sahur means eating early in the morning. Usually, Muslims will sleep at night before 12 o’clock, then wake up at 2 in the morning for sahur. There is a tradition that is commonly carried out by the community, namely mesaharaty. The residents walked around by hitting kentongan or drums shouting, “Sahur! Sahur!” This activity is usually carried out by children and teenagers.

Bulan Ramadan menjadi bulan yang istimewa bagi umat Islam di Indonesia. Umat Islam melaksanakan puasa dengan menahan haus dan lapar selama satu bulan. Terdapat beberapa tradisi yang dijalankan oleh umat Islam pada bulan yang suci ini.

  1. Tradisi padusan

                Tradisi padusan dilaksanakan oleh masyarakat Jawa sebelum bulan Ramadan datang. Masyarakat berbondong-bondong pergi ke mata air, sungai, pantai, atau kolam renang untuk membersihkan diri. Tujuan dari padusan yaitu untuk menyucikan jiwa dan raga sebelum datangnya bulan Ramadan.

  1. Permohonan maaf kepada orang tua

                Menyambut kehadiran bulan Ramadan, sudah menjadi tradisi umat Islam di Indonesia untuk meminta maaf kepada orang tua. Tujuan dari minta maaf ini agar hati menjadi bersih dan tidak ada dendam ketika menjalankan ibadah puasa di bulan Ramadan. Lebih luas lagi, tradisi meminta maaf sebelum puasa ini juga ditujukan kepada keluarga, teman, dan rekan-rekan.

  1. Nyekar

                Tradisi nyekar atau ziarah kubur biasa dilakukan sebelum bulan Ramadan. Masyarakat mengunjungi dan membersihkan makam orang tua dan para leluhur. Selain itu, masyarakat juga mendoakan keluarga yang telah pergi mendahului mereka.

  1. Tradisi apeman

                Tradisi apeman digelar oleh masyarakat di Yogyakarta. Kata apeman berasal dari kata apem yaitu kue tradisional yang terbuat dari tepung beras, gula, telur, santan, dan tapai. Bagi warga Yogyakarta, kue apem memiliki simbol untuk saling memaafkan. Tradisi apeman bertujuan untuk merekatkan persaudaraan antarwarga dalam menyambut bulan Ramadan.

  1. Tradisi membangunkan sahur

                Sahur merupakan kegiatan makan pada dini hari. Biasanya, umat Islam akan tidur malam sebelum pukul 12, lalu bangun pukul 2 pagi untuk sahur. Terdapat tradisi yang lazim dilaksanakan masyarakat yaitu membangunkan sahur. Warga pemukiman berjalan berkeliling dengan memukul kentongan atau kendang sambil berteriak, “Sahur! Sahur!” Kegiatan ini biasa dilakukan oleh anak-anak dan para remaja.
